Dying the Sunset

4/21/2017 0 Comments

I love seeing people with vibrant hair colors. It's so fun, and I love the expression of self. My sisters and I first dyed our hair fun colors in January, and then at the end of March is was time for me to change mine up again, except that my hair color was still pretty vibrant. Today's post is about how I stripped the color and then re-dyed my hair.

I decided to write this post, because I had a hard time finding good information about what to do. I also have curly, dry, damaged hair, which is problematic in and of itself, so adding bleach to that mix was going to have to be handled carefully.

So I did tons of research on how to remove the dye from my hair and how to protect and condition my hair. I already know that my hair can't handle multiple shampooings a week, so I washed my hair once a week with dandruff shampoo to help strip the color. Unfortunately, the dandruff shampoo really dries out my hair, so then I'd follow up with a really intensive deep conditioning. I like HASK Argan Oil Deep Conditioning hair treatment. It's a little pricey, but so worth it, and it smells good to boot!

So the weeks leading up to the new dye job were 2-3 deep conditioning treatments, no heat styling, and weekly shampooing with the dandruff shampoo. This faded the color a lot, but not enough, so then I had to look at other options. With my roots coming in, I figured that a soap cap would be the best bet. Since I was going to have to do the soap cap the day before the dye job because of my schedule, I needed something that I could do myself, and not take up a lot of time, because Baby Girl would still need attention.

I found soap cap recipe on Manic Panic's UK site, and decided to go with it. See their recipe {HERE}. It worked so well!

I still don't think I look good as a blonde, but my roots were a touch lighter, and the pink and purple were out of my hair.

My hair also felt really nice and soft, not dry and sticky. It also didn't take long. I mixed up the concoction, per the instructions and applied. Before I was even done working the entire mixture throughout my head, the color was stripping from my hair.

With my hair now prepped for dye, it was time to give my hubs a pep talk, because he was going to be helping me dye my hair.

Luckily, I had found  a lot of tutorials and pictures on how to do pinwheel hair color. I took screenshots of all of them, and then the  next morning when we were starting we talked out just where each color was going to go.

We parted my hair from ear to ear and then separated each half into 5 sections. We were going to do 3 sections of purple and orange, and then 4 sections of pink. So we had a plan. It didn't help assuage my poor husband. I added some of the HASK conditioner to each pot of Punky color. My hair really can't ever have enough conditioning. I decided to go with Flamingo Pink, Violet, and Flame Red.

After we got all the color onto my hair, we wrapped a plastic bag around my head, and we watched some TV. I left the color on my hair for 90 minutes. With my roots still being dark, I wanted to get as an intense a color as I could.

So after the 90 minutes, I washed the color out of my hair, and it looked like  I murdered a troll. So much color! I also did another round of conditioning while in the shower. It was an awful shower. Cool water showers are not the best thing ever, but that's a concession for these fashion colors.

After my shower, I could immediately tell that my hair was exactly how I wanted it to be. I was over-the-moon pleased with it.

It's been a month, and my color is still going strong. I have resumed taking warm showers, and the color is still going strong. I also am very thankful that my hubs was willing to help me. I'm going to need his help again when I decide to change up the colors.

Headbands and such

11/24/2013 0 Comments
So the other day I shared some of the hats I made for Miss Rae, and the problems I had fitting said hats to her head. I did not have such problems with her headbands.

The headbands I made her were much more forgiving. In fact, some of them fit better now than they did. Yay. I need more headbands for her, but luckily new head band ideas are occurring to me all the time. I just need to find the time to make them. This is a very busy time of year, between normal crafts and such and then the Christmas gifts I'm making......there is simply not enough time in the day!

Anyways, on to the little darlings I have gotten done. :)

I don't have patterns for these. I just kind of made it up as I went.

Maybe one of these days, I'll actually remember how I created some of these and share the pattern.

Hats Galore!

What is it about babies that brings about the need to have hats for them?

Even before we knew what flavor Reagan was going to be, I was planning on hats. Lots of hats. Babies need hats. Babies don't particularly like hats, at least not my babies, but they need hats because they're all born near or in winter.

Combine said need with the awesomely new found skill of crocheting and you've got a hat making monster on your hands.

There is a problem with hats tho. You never know how big the baby's head is going to be. Harrison had a evenly sized head. Right on track for his age. Devlin had a humongous head. Reagan takes after Devlin. She has a big head too. Its a cute head, but its still a big head. At 2 weeks old, her head circumference was 14". That's the size of a 3 month old's head!

So I have a bunch of hats that don't fit my baby girl's head, but that's ok, cause they're getting donated to local hospitals. I'm sure they'll fit some baby's head.

Of all the hats I made Rae, only 3 fit, and that's being generous. One doesn't fit that great, and she hates it. The other 2 she likes tho! Score 1 for Mom!

So the first hat I made her was this adorable ear flap hat from this Micah Makes Pattern. I love this pattern. I have made hats for the boys and the hubs from this pattern and its perfect every time. I've also started to change it a bit, because I like more pointy ear flaps, but that's just personal taste. So here's the hat I made for Reagan from this pattern. I love the pom pom!

The next hat is another one I love, but I did have to alter the pattern a bit (and I don't remember what I did) because it wasn't coming down far enough over her ears for my taste. Its inspired by this hat from Alli Crafts.

Obv, I had to add a little bling to it. I do love me some sparkly buttons! Its also fun playing dress up with the baby girl. Old Navy and I have been friends of late. Love the sparkly cords to go with her sparkly hat!

Ok so those are a few of the hats that have been made for miss. As she grows I guess I'll have to start banging out some more hats for her. :) Oh but I haven't even shown off the headbands yet, so I guess that'll be another post. :)

What a Dah-ling!

How many of us have a super long list of projects that we've found on other blogs? I do! I do! I do!

So this last week, I decided that I would try to knock some of my list down, and I did! I decided to start with this fabric dahlia tute from Holidash.

Aren't they gorgeous? I love am seriously in love with these fabric flowers, but I did not need a brooch.

I needed a super cute headband, so I followed her instructions sans the bit about attaching the flower too the pin. Instead I added some velcro to both the flower and the headband so I can change out the flower to match whatever I'm wearing. :)
So here's some random pictures of me rocking this super cute adorable dahlia! :)
How do you like that swath of sun across my forehead? Yay for sidelights and the house facing due west.
I don't know if you noticed, but I definitely glued my center circle upside down. The pinking'ed side is glued to the flower. Oh well.
Good thing I've got a salon date soon. That hair curling around my ears is driving me crazy!
Oh and here's the Dev-meister, since he saw I was snapping pics he wanted one snapped too!
Someone needs a haircut! Its on the list for this week. Oh and this guy has three loose teeth! So exciting!

Have fun guys, I'll be back tomorrow :)

I Really Made That!

So I'm sure some of you have seen this hair band around bloggy land.

I love the simplicity of the design, but not the hair wrap part, so I put my version on a headband. :)

So here's what I did to put this beaut on headband. :)

I measured my headband and then multiplied that by 5. Then I cut 3 lengths of yarn to that measurement. Then I spent a while braiding the long length. :) Yea...I don't know how to knit. :)

So after all the braiding was done, I followed the directions from Cami to make the knot. Oh and I cut my braid so that the knot ended up being slightly off-center, then followed the directions from Cami. :)
Isn't that a pretty knot? Yellow seems to be my favorite color lately. I have some cute  ballet flats this shade of yellow as well. :)
I don't know if you can see it but the knot is going to sit on the right side of my headband. Yes, my headband has its sides labeled because its one of those swanky ones that have the no grip sides (I get headaches from headbands), but really it was the only black plain one that Target had when I dashed off to make this craft at the spur of the moment. Yay for pre-planning. :)
Next I hot glued a length of ribbon to the back of the headband. I made sure to leave enough to wrap around everything.

Then I glued the yarn pieces down to the ribbon and snipped the ends just above the edge of the ribbon. Next I wrapped the ribbon around the yarn ends. Don't you just love the hot glue threads all over my thumb?
Then I just spot glued around the headband as I think it needed it. I did make sure to glue the knot down though.
So there's the completed headband. By the way....this is the first piece of hair crap I've ever made :) I'm so excited. I even went out and bought some more headbands to alter. :)  Oh and I got a new haircut. :) I got tired of straightening my hair.

Ta Da!
So me taking a picture of myself is not the best idea, but at least you get the idea. :) The cut is very 20's or 30's and is super easy to do, because I don't have to do anything to it other than add gel to stop the frizzy mess of curls that I get to call my hair. :)

Now I'm going to think up some more things to alter. :) Have a great day gals!
