New Job for an Old Window

6/02/2011 1 Comments
I love old windows.

So I have a lot, I mean A LOT of old windows. I picked up about 23 of them at an estate auction last year.

I have used 4 of them for projects so far. The hubs wants me to clear the windows out.

So I took one of the more beat up window frames, the glass was gone, and decided that I needed some love for above my computer monitor in my nifty new computer closet. :)

Along with my window frame, I had the hubs cut three 1/4" plywood panels to fit inside the window spaces, and then grabbed my cork board contact paper stuff, some low loft batting, a fat quarter, some ribbon, and my stapler and a glue gun. The picture below is not a good representation of what you're about to see.
Oh and the pictures for this how-to end here, until the finished product. It might be the worst tute ever. :)

So I cut down my corkboard to fit the panels, then just adhered it to the wood. Easy Peasy.

For the padded memo board, I wrapped the batting and the fat quarter around the wood panel. Yanked out my stapler and then went to town around the edges. I did make sure to stretch everything nice and tight.

Next the glue gun and ribbon came out. I kind of eyeballed where to put the first 45 degree ribbon and then went from there. Hot gluing one edge first and then pulling the ribbon taut and gluing the other edge down.

I used an entire roll of ribbon for this.

After all of that work, I pushed the panels into the openings of the frame and then stapled everything in.  Add picture hanging stuff of your choice and . . . VOILA!

Insta - fun over my monitor. It's also quite handy at holding things. :)

Here's a close up of my pictures, cause I know you want to know who they are. Obv the photo strip is Dev and Steve. I should really put a picture of Harrison too. :) The gorgeous lady with the dog is my Mom and our first dog, Patches. Then the handsome fella in the uniform is my Daddy! He's sporting his Hargrave uniform :)

So that's what I did last night after the kids were fast asleep. :) One more window saved, and only 18 or so left to do something with.

I hope you guys have a great day!

Red Letter Day

5/26/2011 8 Comments
OMG! It's a red letter day! For the first time a in a while, I'm actually writing this post ahead of schedule. :)

Yay me! I'm just going to go ahead and pat myself on the back. You don't mind, do you? I hope not, cause its happening. :)

So without any ado - HERE'S MY NEW CRAFT SPACE! *slightly excited, can you tell?*
There are still holes to sand and paint.
Not everything is in its place.....yet.

But I have space! Lots and lots of space!

And I love it!

What do you guys think?

Oh yea - the desk. Totally an Ana White design. Find it here! :)

Have a great day guys. I'm going to finally get back to sewing.

What's wrong with this picture?

5/16/2011 0 Comments
So I remember when I was little I loved getting Highlights Magazine. I loved it because it was my mail and I loved the games, especially seek and finds.

Well I have a similar thing for you guys today. :)

You know that I've moved my computer into my closet in my sewing room (which is supposed to be a 4th bedroom in our house), which freed up A LOT of space. I mean tons of space. You guys remember my old desk right?

This one.
It was a big desk.  Now it's this.
So all of that space in the corner is free. I have been purposely trying not to show you this room, because its not done. I have one project left to do. I'm sure you'll be able to guess what it is. Oh and you can probably notice a few other changes from the above two pictures, but we'll get to that at a later date. :)

So here's what the corner looks like now.
Something is definitely missing, but wait! Oh what's this? There's something even further wrong. Can you see it? Let me get you a closer look!
Do you see it now? Someone or something messed up my serger. Do you know what a pain in the rear threading a serger is? I do. I hate it. I will tie the new thread to the thread I'm changing out just so I don't have to rethread it. It looks like I may have no choice now. Dangit.

I wonder who the culprit is. Its probably not Devlin. He's been jonesing to make more birds. I do not sew while sitting on the floor. He has to wait. So that rules him out. Stephen doesn't go in my room, unless it's to fix something or come look at something I've done. So that's his alibi. Who does that leave? Oh, I forgot. I have a clue!
DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN.  That's an awfully small foot for somebody other than Harrison. This is our living room. Its a wreck, because I'm working on another project in here, but I have a feeling that since he got a hold of the camera, he is probably the one who got a hold of my serger. Obv, I lightened this photo so you could see that cute foot of his. :)

For those of you wondering. No we cannot get the machines turned on. They are off, the power strip they are plugged into is off, but the power strip itself is not plugged in. So no worries there.

Well I'm going to go facebook some, then I'm going to work on my other project, THEN I'll get to building me a new sewing table. Such a busy day ahead of me. :)

See you guys later!

Damn! That's a sexy closet!

If I do say so myself. :)

Of course, the plan for this was from the hubs.

How many have you seen the TLC commercials for Spouse or House?

I decided to let Steve redesign my storage closet to a computer closet in my sewing room.

Now I know some of you are thinking - Wait!?! Didn't you just do your craft room?

And the answer is yes, I did, but my needs changed. I needed more space for the crafts and somewhere compact and highly organized for my computer and non-craft stuff.

One of the reasons I needed better storage was because I became a Tastefully Simple consultant {insert shameless plug HERE}

I needed more file space and just a better work environment.

So here are the first shots of the closet!

The rest of the room is in shambles, ok I'm slightly exaggerating that one, but not by much.

As for me - I'm going to put my unruly children to bed and then start working on a  special order. Just in time for Mom's Day. :)

See ya soon!

PS - if anyone knows how to get the new blogger crappy posting thing to bring back my signature image - I will love you forever and tell everyone in bloggydom about your amazing feats of blogger knowledge!

I Really Made That!

3/09/2011 3 Comments
So I'm sure some of you have seen this hair band around bloggy land.

I love the simplicity of the design, but not the hair wrap part, so I put my version on a headband. :)

So here's what I did to put this beaut on headband. :)

I measured my headband and then multiplied that by 5. Then I cut 3 lengths of yarn to that measurement. Then I spent a while braiding the long length. :) Yea...I don't know how to knit. :)

So after all the braiding was done, I followed the directions from Cami to make the knot. Oh and I cut my braid so that the knot ended up being slightly off-center, then followed the directions from Cami. :)
Isn't that a pretty knot? Yellow seems to be my favorite color lately. I have some cute  ballet flats this shade of yellow as well. :)
I don't know if you can see it but the knot is going to sit on the right side of my headband. Yes, my headband has its sides labeled because its one of those swanky ones that have the no grip sides (I get headaches from headbands), but really it was the only black plain one that Target had when I dashed off to make this craft at the spur of the moment. Yay for pre-planning. :)
Next I hot glued a length of ribbon to the back of the headband. I made sure to leave enough to wrap around everything.

Then I glued the yarn pieces down to the ribbon and snipped the ends just above the edge of the ribbon. Next I wrapped the ribbon around the yarn ends. Don't you just love the hot glue threads all over my thumb?
Then I just spot glued around the headband as I think it needed it. I did make sure to glue the knot down though.
So there's the completed headband. By the way....this is the first piece of hair crap I've ever made :) I'm so excited. I even went out and bought some more headbands to alter. :)  Oh and I got a new haircut. :) I got tired of straightening my hair.

Ta Da!
So me taking a picture of myself is not the best idea, but at least you get the idea. :) The cut is very 20's or 30's and is super easy to do, because I don't have to do anything to it other than add gel to stop the frizzy mess of curls that I get to call my hair. :)

Now I'm going to think up some more things to alter. :) Have a great day gals!

Introducing the New and Improved - Craft Room!

6/17/2010 17 Comments
Well she's done. FIN.ALL.Y!

It was lots of work, but I want to thank Stephen for helping me out with the room and with watching the kids. I am so happy that I have the space cleaned up, personalized and organized. I can now start sewing up all those pillow slipcovers I keep talking about selling. I've gotten 2 done....I think I need more than that. ;-)

The stripes on the wall are from Oooops paint from Lowe's and the shelves are not the sturdiest, but they'll do for now, or until I add clamps to them and secure them to the wall. All in all I think I spent about $150, mostly storage bins and the like for this room.

So without further ado - On to the show!
So this was the original plan. Things changed slightly. I do still want a new sewing table, but I was working with what I had mostly.

View from the door
The old setup.
View from the door. We attached an over-the-door ironing board to the wall to save on floor space. Steve cut out notches on some left over 2x4 and mounted it on the wall, twice. After I painted it, I put  it back up and then it fell. He fixed it.

The sewing table will be getting replace with a sawhorse desk. I found luaun doors at Lowe's that are 24" x 84" for $21. Can't wait to get started on that, but I need to finish some other things first. :)
My pretty-fied computer area. Hopefully I'll be replacing that original wishblade with a new silhouette soon.
6 of those bins are patterns. I need to get more bins, because some of them are full. Luckily these were on clearance at Lowe's for $2.41 a piece. Score!
I got the idea for the bin labels from a pretty cool life. I love the bit of whimsy it adds.
I also thought this quote was appropriate over my work desk.
I like this saying. It might be one of my new favorite quotes. Don't mind the grocery receipt in the corner. :)
Hopefully now I will be more productive and not as antsy feeling in my craft room. I really was getting bugged by the mess. :)

Progress Report

So the room is underway. I need to get her put back together and painted, but I wanted to give a quick update.

Here's what she looks like now:

Stephen will be very happy when all of my crap stuff will be back into its proper space.

I need to get back to work, but I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!
Enjoy,
Heather
