Or, as many call it, tartine! For those of you that don't know, tartines are basically topless sandwiches - fancy people may refer to these as "open-faced" whilst holding their pinkies in the air and sipping volcanic rock filtered water from a bone china teacup handcrafted by endangered panda bears. Whatever you call it - tartines, topless sandwiches, trumped up toast - the basic concept is the same: stuff layered top of a slice of bread. It's kind of like building a salad in that you want a balance of different flavors and textures. Maybe something sweet, something crunchy, something creamy, and so on. Heather has a penchant for tartines, and we spent a good half hour or more today discussing recipes for them. The next few weeks will be delicious!
One of the really great things about tartines is that you can get as lazy with them as you can get creative. I needed something to snack on the other day and threw one together with leftovers I had around.
Ingredients
- 2 gluten free waffles (I just tried Van's - pretty good!)
- The last of my fuel butter from this blog entry
- 1 plum, cut into eighths
- A drizzle of maple syrup
- A sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice
Method
- Smear the butter evenly over the waffles. Top with four plum wedges each. Drizzle maple syrup on top and then sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.
*You could roast the plums if you wanted to. I wanted to eat right away, though.Pro-tip: Do not try to eat this with your hands. You will end up very sticky. Use a knife and fork.
And that, ladies and gents, is all there is to it. You can choose any type of bread (or waffle) you like. You can choose any toppings you like. You can make it sweet or savory. Get crazy!
